The fearless one

Image
I went to a medicine shop at the local market. It seemed the fear of pandemic was widespread. Not many shops were open. The ones that had open doors did not have any customer except their salesmen sitting with a tired look. It was a desolate scene. As expected, the medicine shop had an opposite picture. There was a queue of about six people standing one after another at a certain distance in between. I was happy that people who were out were disciplined and following the norm of social distancing. At the hour of mental anxiety, people speak in low tone. That adds to the worry. I took my place in the end keeping the tail of the queue. There was some time left to reach the storekeeper. I took out my mobile phone, put off the right glove, and concentrated on responding to my office emails. My time in the market would not be wasted this way. One after another the men and women went ahead and sent their requisition. It was a simple wait and keeping pace with others. I made sure that I didn’...

Image

The toothbrush family

Image
There is a small glass rack below the bathroom mirror where you find our toothbrush family. They are the daddy brush, the mummy brush and the brush boy Brady. They live inside a white ceramic cup which they call their home. They are a happy family and have fun together. You can spot their colours. The daddy brush is white, the mummy brush is red and Brady is yellow like a lemon. They are owned by three people – father, mother, and the young boy Ruku who all clean their teeth twice a day: before breakfast and after supper. Ruku’s little sister Tuku, the youngest one in the family, has no toothbrush yet. Ruku loves to play with his yellow toothbrush Brady. It becomes his magic wand as Ruku waves the brush over his head. The brush also takes the form of a flute as Ruku tries to play it with his fingers and lips. When Ruku travels into an imaginary dense jungle, Brady becomes his weapon. Sometimes he lifts little Brady like a flag and cries out, “I am the winner, I am the best, I am the st...

The bicycle training

Image
M y grandfather nurtured a dream that his grandson would learn to ride a bicycle. It began to come into reality when I was promoted to Grade 3. My elder cousin was gifted with a bicycle when he was of my age. Over the years his legs grew long and he was unable to manage that smaller bike. Hence, it was decided that I would use that old blue and red rusted bicycle. I was excited to see a real big gift when it was brought to our house in a yellow public taxi. It didn’t matter whether my gift was really new or old. In those days we used to recycle a lot of things. A neighbour boy who used to work in a cycle repair shop was asked to oil and polish my bicycle and make it a ridable one. He was also invited to be my trainer. There was no question of remuneration; but he was given an offer by my grandfather. He announced, “I will give you a box full of twenty rasgollas the day my grandson rides this bicycle himself.” The boy, named Raja, smiled and nodded in agreement.  The next day he cam...
