In the beginning of this millennium, I entered an institution that carried a legacy of close to two centuries and it stimulated my intellectual development. Presidency College, Kolkata, originally founded in 1817 as a college for Hindu students, represented a range of emotions in my mind's hueless palette. I was both conscious and eager to absorb the colours that this college was to offer to me. The iron gate opened in a mellowing autumn light and I saw myself climbing up the stairs of the neo-classical Baker Building that housed a physics laboratory where the great statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis began his pioneering work. My destination, the Department of Zoology, was on the third floor flanking the Department of Physiology.   ১৯১৯ সালের শেষে রবীন্দ্রনাথ যান সিলেট সফরে। সেখানে এক মণিপুরী রাসনৃত্যের অনুষ্ঠান দেখে মুগ্ধ হন কবি। ফেরার পথে ত্রিপুরায় এসে মহারাজ বীরেন্দ্র কিশোর মাণিক্যকে অনুরোধ করেন তিনি যেন শান্তিনিকেতনের জন্য একজন মণিপুরী নৃত্য শিক্ষককে পাঠান। কথামতো কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই আশ্রম বিদ্যালয়ে পৌঁছান রাজকুমার বুদ্ধিমন্ত সিং। কবির আগ্রহে, আর বুদ্ধিমন্তের পরিচালনায় আশ্রমের ছাতিমতলায় শুরু হয় নৃত্যশিক্ষার পাঠ। প্রথম শিক্ষার্থী হয় ছাত্রেরা, তারপরে আগ্রহের বশে সেই ক্লাসে যোগ দেয় ছাত্রীরাও। কিছু মণিপুরী নৃত্যভঙ্গি আয়ত্ত হবার পরে কবি নির্দেশ দেন সেই ভঙ্গিগুলি তাঁর গানের সাথে মিলিয়ে নৃত্য রচনা করার। উৎসাহী ছাত্রছাত্রীরা এই নতুন সৃষ্টি কর্মে নেমে পড়ে। কবির সর্বকাজের সহায়ক প্রতিমা দেবী দায়িত্ত্ব নেন এই নাচের ক্লাসগুলি পরিচালনা করার। সূচনা হয় এক অনন্য সাংস্কৃতিক ইতিহাসের। ভারতের কোনো বিদ্যালয়ে সর্বপ্রথম অন্য পঠনপাঠনের সাথে শুরু হয় নৃত্যশিক্ষা। ছাত্রীদের যোগদান সেই শিক্ষাকে নবতর মাত্রা দেয়। শান্তিদেব ঘোষ এই নতুন ধারাটিকে বলেন, শান্তিনিকেতনের নৃত্য আন্দোলন। প্রথমদিকে মণিপুরী নৃত্যের প্রাধান্য থাকলেও ধীরে ধীরে সেই ...
